Long-term care needs fundamental policy changes to protect both workers and residents, says Professor Tamara Daly
Long-term care work, at its best, is relationship-oriented care, which recognizes the need to care for more than the older person’s bodily needs. This type of care is highly skilled and takes time to learn and time to provide day-to-day to residents, according to Faculty of Health Professor Tamara Daly, director of the York University Centre for Aging Research & Education and director of the Imagine Aging SSHRC Partnership.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the flaws in a long-term care system plagued by low pay, non-permanent work, understaffing and high attrition rates. It is also providing an opportunity to change policy now, and for the future, says Daly, who co-authored an article for Policy Options Magazine, along with University of Ottawa Professor Ivy Lynn Bourgeault and Professor Katie Aubrecht of St. Francis Xavier University.
